Is Ellen Ripley Headed For Another Resurrection?

By Rafe Telsch: 2008-07-07 10:10:11
Is Ellen Ripley Headed For Another Resurrection? This year has brought Rambo and Indiana Jones back to the big screen, and last year brought us reappearances of Rocky and John McClane. Now Sigourney Weaver is saying what’s good for the gander may be good for the goose, and she may be interested in cashing in with the boys and bringing back a decade-gone character for another round of action.

She’s talking, of course, about Ellen Ripley, the star of the Alien movies. The actress told OK! Magazine that she wouldn’t mind bringing the character back, especially if she had a director like Ridley Scott and a good story idea.

Of all of the character resurfaces in the past few years, I am really opposed to this one because Ripley has one thing going against her that the others didn’t. She’s dead! (You thought I was going to say she’s a woman, didn’t you? Shame, shame, shame!). It was bad enough that Ripley was already brought back to life for the aptly titled fourth film, Alien: Ressurection, but even that stretched the boundaries of believability and received a lot of criticism for its approach. Trying to bring her back a decade later just because the boys are doing it is a bad idea.

Ironically, the whole killing off of Ellen Ripley in Alien 3 was Weaver’s idea. She didn’t want to play the character anymore and asked her to be killed off so she couldn’t - the Charlton Heston approach to sequels, if you will.

I’m not saying I wouldn’t see another Alien picture with Sigourney Weaver, especially if a better story than the silly AvP ideas could be found. It would be difficult considering the current status of the character though.

  • I would love it. Forget CGI the next thing is the 3D technology that Cameron is developing for AVATAR. I reckon that 20th C Fox will do another, Sigourney's profile is gonna hit mega-stardom again next year in Avatar, they will be able to ride on Sigourney's success on that and gain from her bankability and really do well for Alien 5. Resurrection was awful, we need something, dark, mysterious and sexy, a kind of Batman Begins of the Alien films! Sigourney will be sexy and amazing! Come on look at her now and she is nearly 60. Love it, love her!
  • The trilogy of books starting with EarthHive is fantastic and a much much better story than Alien 3. The resurrected Ripley appears halfway through - they had the resurrection idea long before Alien 4 came out.

    It would still be possible to do this series. Actually, now that CGI has advanced enough to allow the earth scenes to be done, it would be worthwhile.

    It's also notable that;
    a. The Elephant trunked species from the crashed spaceship appears in it.
    b. The Alien homeworld appears in it - with really big mutthers...
  • If she did it (and I believe she could could) they would have to scrap A3 and Ressurection... I read an incredible script once where Ripley woke up on a station orbiting earth, Newt and Hicks are alive, Bishop is functional. They had been asleep for over 300 years in hyperspace (explaining the aging), A3 was a dream (a nightmare caused by the extended hypersleep where Ripleys fears were played out, back on another planet with aliens, Newt dead, alone with crazy prison people, etc.).
    In this movie a face-hugger with a queen stowed aboard of the escape ship (similar to A3) but gets ahold of a dock worker. Hijinx ensue, aliens all over the station, but in the meantime a Marine ship is on auto-pilot coming back from the LV-426 (after picking up a distress signal). The movie end with the marine ship docking while the survivors on the station are fighting off the Queen and her hoard, and the Marine ship doors open and there is another Queen, having taken over the Marine ship from LV-426 and laying her eggs, etc. the two Queens and the two hoards battle each other, as Ripley and crew escape and the destroy the station
