Is This The First Bond 22 Poster?

By Rafe Telsch: 2008-01-28 22:19:41
Is This The First Bond 22 Poster? I’m still trying to figure out the point of the title for the new James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace. Not only does it not flow very well, but it just doesn’t sound very Bondish. That’s not to say the franchise hasn’t had some silly titles in the past, but this one just doesn’t feel like those other strange titles.

Now Toxic Shock has gotten their hands on the first poster bearing the Quantum of Solace name and it fits the poster mold as well as the name fits, which is to say, not very well. In fact, I’m not confident this is a genuine poster. It looks a little fake to me (although I’ve thought that about real posters in the past as well).

Thematically the poster does follow up the images of Daniel Craig in the advertising for Casino Royale, but the layout of the poster and the text at the bottom feels like a throwback to an older time – something Casino Royale didn’t quite have. Why would the producers build on the last movie but in a retro way?

I’m hoping all the bitching about the movie title and this leaked poster is the extent of complaining I get to do about the next Bond picture. I saw a lot of potential in Daniel Craig and Casino Royale and I’m hoping they maintain that for another picture. Right now it looks like they’re just trying to hard. Hopefully that’s not a problem with the movie itself as well.

UPDATE! This is not a real poster, but the first REAL Bond 22 poster has just been released. You can see it HERE.

  • Sam,

I did read that report. A few things I noticed:

    1. Katey Rich posted it. Rafe Telsch posted this report. Sometimes in the past, though rare, CB reporters seem to be unaware of the content of previous posts.

    2. In that report, Katey didn't understand the meaning of the title, translating it as "amount of solace in the face of trouble," which is not the same translation at the link I provided. Given that the link I provided consists of a summary of the content of the short story, I think its translation would be more accurate. Not even the Variety report to which CB linked described the title's origins.

    3. CB has yet to explain the content of the short story on which the title is based, and I have yet to see a CB reporter that understood the meaning of the title. I posted a link that seems to explain it. Just trying to be helpful.
  • Dan, we know that. Cinema Blend reported that last week:

Where've you been dude? Or do you expect them to re-report that every single time they mention the title of the movie?
  • This is definitely fan art. Besides, the image of Craig was promotional for Casino Royale.
  • Quantum of Solace means "smallest amount of compassion." It seems to imply that this will be Bond in revenge-mode.

Look here for the origin of the title. Yes, it is a title from one of Ian Fleming's original stories.
