Is Watchmen Back On Track?![]()
When I heard Paul Greengrass was finally making a movie out of the long-in-gestation Watchmen project, I ran out and bought the comic to finally read it. Hey, I’ve been busy… for twenty years. Immediately after I read it, the project imploded, a casualty of new management at Paramount and petty squabbling over money.
But the best comic ever written may be back on track to being brought to the big screen, and I’m starting to get excited all over again. The thing totally won me over, it’s not just a great comic, it’s an amazing piece of literature. The Movie Blog and Entertainment Weekly are reporting that the project may be back on. After failing to coalesce at Paramount, EW says talks are underway to produce the movie at Warner Bros. Any details than that are non-existent at the moment. Greengrass and his team may still be involved, and EW seems to indicate that producer Larry Green is involved in the negotiations with Warner Bros. If it happens, the film could be huge. “Watchmen” has left an indelible mark on pop culture and our society, influencing the people who write our entertainment. Published in 1986, the series of books that comprise “Watchmen” is generally regarded as the first “adult” superhero comic. Alan Moore’s masterwork was the first realistic look at the lives of superheroes. In a way, it’s almost like a rated-R version of ‘The Incredibles’, only in addition to portraying superheroes as real people, it tackles heavy political and sociological issues with gut wrenching honesty. It’s all wrapped around a crime conspiracy, and the book follows several late-career superheroes in an alternate version of America. Moore of course, is opposed to any adaptation of any of his work. But Alan Moore, genius though he is, is also freakin nuts. Literally. I mean, I think he’s unbalanced. Most true geniuses are. |
