The Punisher sequel has a name (Punisher: War Journal) and now it looks like it has a villain. The vigilante anti-hero will face off against the mobster Jigsaw, according to actor Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum), who claims to have been offered the villain role for the sequel to Thomas Jane’s 2004 movie.
In the Marvel mythos, Jigsaw was a mobster assassin who attempted to kill Frank Castle (aka The Punisher) and failed. Fighting the Punisher, the killer was thrown into a plate glass window and when surgeons attempted to piece back together his face it was stitched together like a horrific jigsaw puzzle, leading to his name. How much the movie will remain faithful to that origin is unknown, as Considine referred to the character as a mobster and stated he was about ready to read the script.
Of course, Thomas Jane isn’t returning as The Punisher for the sequel. The role has been taken over by Ray Stevenson, which makes Considine a bigger name than the star – not too far removed from the first movie which featured John Travolta as The Punisher’s enemy.
The casting news comes from Coming Soon, who saw Considine post a message on the forums of a fan site, paddyconsidine.co.uk. Good spot, that – assuming it is Considine making the post. Hopefully this will appease the fans who lost out when the actor was passed over for Watchmen, a project many people hoped he’d be attached to.
