It doesn’t take much to get James Bond fans excited, and in these days of the Internet, it doesn’t take much to get a rumor started. So Ain’t It Cool has kind of hit on the perfect storm, with a Quantum of Solace rumor that is so crazy and also amazing that has earned this wonderfully hyperbolic title: “CRAZY ASS RUMOR OF THE DAY! INSANE IF TRUE! THE BIG BOSS IN QUANTUM OF SOLACE?!”

OK, fine, I’m jealous I didn’t come up with that title myself. Anyway, what’s the rumor? Apparently a guy who has been working on the Quantum of Solace set mentioned that filming a cameo for the film would be none other than Al Pacino, the greatest yeller and over-emoter of our day. Not only that, but Pacino will apparently be the big baddie, the head of the terrorist organization introduced in Casino Royale that will also be the focus of Quantum.

So let’s pretend this isn’t a rumor. If it’s a cameo, just a few days of filming, that mean Pacino probably only has one scene, and in all likelihood won’t be fighting Daniel Craig so much as glowering at him from a safe distance. But is it going to be some big secret in the film, or will we see him once and the movie will go on matter-of-factly chasing after the other villains? I’m personally hoping for a kind of Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget scenario, where his identity is withheld until the chair turns around to reveal… MICHAEL CORLEONE. But, y’know, an older, angrier Michael Corleone.

What do we think? True, or just wishful thinking? The James Bond franchise has never been much about going for the big stars, sticking with character actors who don’t distract you from a world that’s pretty absurd to begin with (a glove compartment defibrillator?!) But it’s pretty fun to imagine the opening night audience completely flipping its lid when they see Al Pacino stalk into the frame. I figure the guy won’t ruin the movie with his presence, and might add some intrigue, so why not?
