James Cameron Defends Avatar Day It’s no secret that the Avatar marketing campaign hasn’t exactly been living up to the monstrous budget that it needs to recoup. Remember that palpable feeling that so many people felt in the months leading up to The Dark Knight? This flick would need that kind of buzz or better to have any hope of making enough money to even its budget. Yet, with just a few weeks left until its release, James Cameron’s opus has yet to build up mainstream excitement. Some say the first misstep was Avatar Day.

Now James Cameron, speaking to Total Film, has come out to defend himself and his marketing team against critics of Avatar Day. “Avatar Day, to me, was so necessary,” Cameron said. “[Fox] was going to release a teaser trailer anyway. And I was mostly concerned about seeing the material in a short form, especially on a small screen.” Cameron does admit that the teaser was not supposed to be released prior to Avatar Day, which was arguably Fox’s biggest fumble. “The studio kind of screwed it up a little bit, as they are wont to do,” Cameron stated.

Cameron also seems to understand the how alienating his film may be to people uninformed of its plot and background. “I thought the shock of the new… You know, inherently blue faces just don’t look real, so it’s very easy to dismiss it, regardless of how well accomplished it is,” he said. “So that’s why I wanted to do Avatar Day, and have a more immersive first look at the movie.”

I’m hoping that Fox can pull it together over the next month and give this film the kind of reception that Cameron deserves for his years of hard work. Does he deserve it? We’re not sure at this point, but he definitely deserves a chance at the mainstream audience he’s historically so good at attracting.
