James Cameron is busy developing a handful of projects including Avatar 2, figuring out a way to spend all that Avatar money, and in his spare time helping the government fix the oil spill. I really wouldn't think he could be hard up for work or bored, but that's really the only explanation I can come up with for today's news.

According to an interview will.i.am conducted with Vibe, Cameron will be traveling to South America with the Black Eyed Peas to film a 3D concert documentary about the hip-hop group. Ever modest, will.i.am explained “We have the biggest director because we are the biggest group on the planet." Yes, of course you are.

Apparently it's not just some director-for-hire gig or anything, as Cameron has participated in shaping the creative direction of the film.

"There will be a storyline that [Cameron] came up with, which will be dope. It’s a full-length film and it's based around our tour activities. We’ve toured from America and Europe, to the Middle East, South America, Asia and Africa. It’s not like we go, 'Yo, we are international, you know what I’m saying? London and Paris!' Nah, that’s just two cities. We want to go across the planet.”

3D concert films are nothing new-- U2 did it, the Jonas Brothers did it, even hippies like Phish did it-- but it's definitely a twist to have a director as huge as Cameron involved. Is he a closet Black Eyed Peas fan? Is he trying to test out some new 3D technology? Is he just looking for an excuse to go party like a rock star? He does have a hilarious music video directing credit in his past (embedded below-- look for Kathryn Bigelow in a cowboy hat!) so maybe he's just trying to get back to his roots. Anyone hoping Avatar 2 would be coming sooner than later, though, must be pretty disappointed.
