The Day the Earth Stood Still currently stands, precariously, atop the box office heap. That means everyone is now looking for the next 1950’s science fiction movie to remake. These movies are now considered classics even though no one would even think about renting or buying them on DVD. The next “rent a title that sounds familiar” with robots from the Eisenhower era headed to the big screen might be Forbidden Planet. But wait, there’s more, famous big-cheese director James Cameron is considering directing…..again.
The guys at IESB say Cameron may want to direct the script written by Babylon 5 and Changeling writer J. Michael Straczynski. This isn’t the first time Cameron has been interested in remaking the 1956 film that features Robby the Robot. He was reportedly considering the same movie do-over way back in 1998. That’s ten years on earth but probably much longer on Altair IV.
Cameron is currently a busy guy, with Avatar due in 2009 and Battle Angel planned for 2011. Since this is a guy whose last actual fiction film directorial effort was…yup..Titanic, it doesn’t seem like he’d be able to get to Forbidden Planet until about 2023. In the meantime, you can watch the original. Oh wait, you’d never do that.
