James Cameron Still Talking About Avatar, Blu-ray and Sequel Chat
Now that Avatar is entering its third month of a very wide release, you’d think that James Cameron would get sick of talking about it. Unfortunately for all of us that’s not the case. The big JC chatted up the Wall Street Journal about Blu-ray and DVD release plans, which he actually got wrong. He’s mortal! Initially Cameron mentioned that the release would happen on Earth Day in bare-bones form, with a “value-added” 3D Blu-ray to be released in November. Sorry, Jim. That’s not the case.
Coming Soon was later contacted by Fox to clarify that “3D is in the conceptual stage and Avatar won’t be out on 3D Blu-ray in November.” The director has spoken in favor of new 3D TVs being developed by multiple brands, and it looks like instead of slapping a pair of 3D glasses in with the Blu-ray, Fox wants to wait until these new fangled TVs find their way onto the market before giving you the REAL Avatar experience. Now on to good news for people chasing that original Avatar experience. Cameron is looking to produce a sequel to his film both cheaper and faster than the $550 million starter. Whether or not this means he’ll give this project priority over Battle Angel and several other projects has yet to be determined. It was mentioned however that it would see the same remaining characters continuing on into a wider universe, expanding onto more of the moons surrounding Polyphemus, of which Pandora is one of 14. If you’re not Avatared out, it’s safe at this point to start buying blue body paint and stocking up for future Na’vi LARPing sessions based not only on a novelized prequel, but on a full-on sequel as well. Let’s hope that Cameron continues his trend of making sequels even more awesome than the originals. |
