James Cameron Will Make Everything 3D

By Katey Rich: 2008-05-19 19:46:25
James Cameron Will Make Everything 3D The people who are totally nuts about 3D-- mostly, 3D technology manufacturers and theater owners-- are always saying that any kind of movie could work in 3D. Oscar-winning dramas! Romantic comedies! Experimental shorts! The rest of us usually think that's a crazy idea, but if there's anyone could pull off a serious drama in 3D, it would be James Cameron. That might be the direction he heads, too, once Avatar comes out in 2009 and hopefully proves to us how very much we've missed him.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron said that he hopes to make his next project a true story, about the free diver Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras and his romance with Audrey Mestre. And, of course, he won't be leaving his bag of technological tricks on dry land. "It's a drama, a love story. This will require underwater photography, which will look gorgeous in 3D." He has a point, but won't it be distracting to be watching a touching romance with things flying out at you all the time? Not so, Cameron claims. “I think (3-D for drama) is the big overlooked area (now) because the economics don't really drive that direction."

In what seems like typical James Cameron fashion, he's convinced that making everyone believe a 3D drama is as easy as recreating the damn Titanic. "The visual aesthetic of doing dramatic stuff in 3-D is very simple. Just don't remind people that they are watching a 3D movie. That will take them out of the experience." But what's the point of 3D if you're not reminded of watching 3D? I'm not the most experienced 3D moviegoer, but isn't the fun part when things fly out in your face and you're totally thrown out of the moment? Is it really possible to engage someone so much with 3D that they forget they're watching it?

It's been so long since James Cameron made a movie that it's hard to automatically say, “Well, it's James Cameron, so it must be good.” But he's also been at the forefront of virtually every kind of movie technology that's come across in the last 20 years-- remember the melting T-1000, or the CGI passengers on the Titanic? He's like a kid playing with a toy when it comes to the bells and whistles of filmmaking, and while he might go overboard with it, he'll most definitely make it interesting. So Casablanca might not ever be better in 3D, but whatever Cameron comes up with will at least be worth looking at-- especially if we see Avatar and are left begging for more.
