It was just on Tuesday - when it was revealed that the writers of Brokeback Mountain are currently writing two western scripts - that I began to get extremely giddy about the possible return of the classic genre. Now we have another project to make us even more excited. THR reports that James Mangold, who directed the excellent remake of 3:10 To Yuma back in 2007, has been hired to helm The Gunslinger. A modern western, the story is about a former Texas ranger who seeks revenge on those that murdered his brother. Based on a spec script by John Hlavin, who wrote the upcoming Underworld 4: New Dawn, the film is expected to enter production this spring.

More westerns? Bring it on. I honestly won't be satisfied until the genre saturates the market the way superheroes do. All of these projects cropping up only gives me hope for the future. Here's hoping that the Coen brothers' True Grit kills at the box office - as it should.
