You should start by knowing that Jason Reitman (director of Thank You For Smoking and Juno) and Edgar Wright (director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) are pals, that they look almost exactly alike, and every now and then refer to each other as husbands. I know this all because I follow both of them on Twitter (Jason here, Edgar here), and their conversations with each other about filmmaking, editing, and traveling to do film promotion can sometimes be the best reason to be on Twitter.
Anyway, this is all a long way of explaining that you ought to take the following sentence with a grain of salt: Jason Reitman has seen 30 minutes of Scott Pilgrim, and calls it "a Matrix for love and how we are willing to fight for it." He put it all on his Twitter feed after Wright showed him 30 minutes of the film, and the insidery nature of all of that should you remind you that this is a filmmaker saying nice things about his friend's film. Then again, Reitman didn't have to say anything, and seems to be a forthright guy in most respects. So when he gushes about Scott Pilgrim, Wright's adaptation of the graphic novel series, it comes with at least some credibility.
Below is the series of Reitman's tweets, which are pretty much the only reaction we have anywhere to any part of the film. Whether or not you want to take him at his word, you have to admit it's pretty exciting to hear.
In London, @edgarwright showed me 30min of Scott Pilgrim. While sworn to secrecy (so much, surprised blood wasn't demanded) I will say this:
It is a game changer for Edgar and the genre. It moves the speed of light and carries more unadulterated joy than Ive seen in recent cinema.
SP does what everyone our age has been dreaming about: achieves the first all encompassing film of the joystick generation.
I'm in awe of the sheer control in the filmmaking. It feels like a "Matrix" for love and how willing we are to fight for it.
If I had a movie coming out next year, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it. Hats off my friend. Can't get it out of my head.
