Jason Statham is one of the very few action stars out there who hasn’t been rumored to be involved in a comic book movie. He remedied that today in an interview with IESB, where he started dropping hints about future projects.
Statham says he “took a meeting for Sub-Mariner,” which sounds like an awful role for him and he agrees. Statham’s assessment of the project is, “I don’t know if I’d look right running around in a tight speedo with wings on my ankles.” I don’t know if anyone would Jason. Hopefully they’d at least nix the silly ankle feathers if Namor ever gets his own film.
Also on Jason Statham’s possible comic book movie list is The Crow, which he says a non-specific “they” is in the process of remaking. The original of course, starred Brandon Lee and was a huge cult hit. It also doesn’t need to be remade… it’s not that old after all. If they do redo it though, Statham says “if that one comes my way, bang!” I guess that means he’d really like to do it. Aside from the fact that a remake is a horrible idea (but then when isn’t it), I have a hard time picturing him all gothed out like Brandon Lee. Statham’s best when he’s playing a brute, and The Crow is a little more subtle than his normal head-butting stuff.

I would say no as well to Jason playing a remake of The Crow. I have been a fan of comics for many years and have read The Crow as well as the movie script. With all the problems that the film encounter while being made, Brandon shine. It was rushed to be under budget and with that being said it was sloppy from and filmmaker's point of view. If it was to be remade... allow the writers to keep the story faithful to James O'barr vision, allow the director to tell that story visually and be reasonable with the budget and timeline that is needed to make a quality film.
I think it's impossible for them to recapture the gothic mood and the pure pain of that movie. I think Statham could kick ass but he could never play the tortured soul that is the Crow. Brandon was superb, and if you ever read the graphic novel, was spot on for the character. I'm sorry, this is one I'll fight to death that it must be left alone.
Pleeeeease?
Why hasn't Hollywood figured out that they could probably remaster some of their older movies and re-release them to a new audience instead of doing an all-out remake?
I guarantee they could put the original version of The Crow in theaters right now, give it some good marketing, and they would make a nice profit on it. I mean hell, Disney has been putting Nightmare Before Christmas back in theaters for the last few years and will continue to do so because it makes a good return.
