It's impossible not to love a well made heist movie. If done right they can include action, comedy, drama all while serving a complex plot that will keep the audience guessing and on the edge of their seats. That said, nothing can kill a heist film faster than unoriginality and an unwillingness to try something new. That's why it rarely makes sense to remake them - but when has sense ever stopped Hollywood?

Deadline is reporting that Jaume Collet-Serra, the director of Orphan and Unknown (which comes out today), has been assigned the task of remaking Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Cercle Rouge, also known as The Red Circle. The movie is being written by Steven Knight who previously wrote David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. The film was previously rumored to be remade by Johnnie To back in 2009 with Orlando Bloom and Chow Yun-fat. Unlike the Melville film, which was set in France, Collet-Serra's Red Circle will be set in Hong Kong.

What's even worse about this is that it comes just a little under a year after Christopher Nolan made one of the more inventive heist films in years in Inception. Rather than sitting around and waiting for this remake, I suggest going on to Netflix, watching the original (it's available on Instant Watch) and forgetting that this new project exists.
