Before his face was plastered on subway ads reading "Punk. Genius. Billionaire" or he killed zombies in a hit movie, Jesse Eisenberg made small movies, lots of them. Even in this year of The Social Network he also starred in Holy Rollers, a small-scale drama about Hasidic Jew ecstasy dealers. So it's really not such a surprise that, even on the brink of a likely Oscar nomination, Eisenberg is gravitating toward the tiny project Free Samples, which stars mumblecore indie stalwart Jess Weixler.

According to The Wrap, Weixler will play a law school drop-out working at an ice cream truck while figuring out what to do next. She's eventually wooed by Eisenberg, who will play a supporting role alongside other relatively familiar names Jason Ritter (The Event), Halley Feiffer (The Squid and the Whale), Keir O'Donnell (My Generation), Jocelyn Donahue (House of the Devil) and Matt Walsh (Cyrus). Oh, and Tippi Hedren is in this too; you may remember her from a brief stint as Alfred Hitchcock's muse and avian victim in The Birds. Y'know, just being a Hollywood legend and stuff.

Not that any of us were all that concerned about Eisenberg selling out given his Zombieland and Social Network success, but it is nice to see him sticking with what he's really passionate about, whether it's doing theater in New York or making this movie with a handful of people he's worked with before. Free Samples is directed by Jay Gammill from Jim Beggarly's script, and if this movie doesn't debut at Sundance in 2012, then something has gone seriously wrong in the cosmic order.
