I’ve gotten no fewer than four emails on this in the past two or three hours. At first I ignored it, then a couple more came in sending me scrambling for some sort of confirmation. I can’t find one. So, please read everything below with a great deal of skepticism.
With New Line’s rejection of Peter Jackson as their director of choice for The Hobbit, it only makes sense that they’d be out looking for someone to replace him. Assuming of course, that they even have the right to make the movie (for more on that go here). So who will they get?
According to some of our readers, it may be Amelie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. And what do I base this rumor on? Nothing except several different emails from people who claim to know something about it, but who may in fact be incredible liars or may have been themselves deceived. This isn't exactly hard news people, but we do our best to report everything to you. No filters, just a big sign on this one that says "Beware".
Still, it’s an interesting though. Would you want Jeunet? Amelie has it’s fans, but I’ve always though it a little overrated. And of course there’s Alien: Resurrection on his resume, the film that killed the Alien franchise and sent it into the Versus clutches of American cinema antichrist Paul W.S. Anderson. Wouldn’t the be a weird sort of synergy? Jeunet directs the fourth Alien movie and ends that behemoth only to step in and direct the fourth Lord of the Rings movie and kill that too. Oh the irony.
Face it New Line, no one should touch this movie except Peter Jackson. Maybe he’s being unreasonable with this whole lawsuit thing, but you’re the one that’s going to come out the loser unless you simply pay him and then kiss his ass until he does you a furry-footed solid and starts making the film.
