Jewel Staite Joins The Tribe

By Rafe Telsch: 2007-10-05 21:10:05
Jewel Staite Joins The Tribe Browncoats should start getting a little worried. Although news came from Serenity’s demised pilot that there’s plans for a sequel to 2005’s movie in the works, the cast seems to be getting pretty busy with other projects. Nathan Fillion just entered Wisteria Lane on Desperate Housewives and now the cute little engineer Kaylee is heading into the horror genre with a role in The Tribe.

Actress Jewel Staite, who played Kaylee on Firefly as well as roles in other sci-fi/fantasy shows like Wonderfalls, and Space Cases talked with Sci Fi Wire about her role in The Tribe where she moves from supporting character to leading role. Her character in The Tribe is Liz, ” a girl who starts off as being very meek and kind of subservient and scared about life in general and then really has to step up to the plate and become the leader, become the alpha in the situation,” according to Staite.

The situation: Liz and her friends find themselves stranded on an island after their boat wrecks. However, they are not alone on the island. Staite says the concept has been mistaken as a slasher concept, but the picture is more sci-fi/fantasy than slasher pic, with a lot of suspense and thrills.

The Tribe will hit theaters next year. Currently Staite is playing in Stargate: Atlantis as Dr. Jennifer Keller, and if the former Firefly engineer knows anything about sequel plans, she’s not spilling them.
