The trailer for Heartless has two problems: First, it distorts Jim Sturgess’ beautiful face. Secondly, and more importantly, it doesn’t provide a good sense of what writer/director Philip Ridley will deliver. Of course you don’t want to give away a film’s entire plot in the trailer, but this one slops together a bunch of eerie images that get the viewer no closer to understanding the gist of the story.

Heartless got some good buzz when it debuted at FrightFest last year, but only has plans to hit theaters in the UK. The film is about a guy named Jamie (Sturgess) with a heart-shaped birthmark covering a portion of his face. He’s frequently taunted where he lives in London’s East End, an area known for gang violence. When his mother is murdered the local news blames a person in a hoodie wearing a devil mask, but Jamie soon finds out they’ve pegged the wrong culprit. The actual offender isn’t even human.
