Mr. & Mrs. Smith helmer Doug Liman is moving from relationship action movies to science fiction. He’s working on a sci-fi thriller called Jumper.
Like most movies, it’s based on something else. In this case, a book by Steven Gould. The novel’s plot sounds a little like The Butterfly Effect but with teleportation instead of time travel. It’s the story of a kid from a broken home who discovers he has the power to teleport from one place to another. He uses his newfound transportation method to track down the man he believes killed his mother. Naturally, a kid appearing and disappearing out of thin air attracts the attention of the National Security Agency. But he’s also followed by another kid with the same powers.
The Hollywood Reporter says Liman has finished casting the pic. Being Julia’s Tom Sturridge will star as teleportation Timmy. Jamie Bell, who played the annoying and completely unnecessary character “Jimmy” in King Kong will play the other jumper. And for the ladies, there will be romance. Teresa Palmer, who next stars in The Grudge 2 will play Sturridge’s obligatory love interest.
It’s not a bad idea for a science fiction thriller really. The whole idea of teleportation has been pretty well explored on television in everything from Star Trek to Sliders, but not so much on the big screen. Liman’s a capable action director, so Jumper could be fun.
