We've already gotten a good look at the images from Captain America: The First Avenger that Entertainment Weekly published last week. But what do all of these images mean, exactly? Sure, we can look at them and send our best Marvel universe experts to interpret them (which we did-- thanks Eric!), but what better way to put the images in context than to get explanation from the director himself, Joe Johnston?

The tireless geeks over at Comic Book Movie did just that, going over each image with Johnston to hear not just what they're depicting, but also some behind-the-scenes details about where they're shooting and what we might not be seeing just outside the frame. Check out two images below that come with my favorite explanations from Johnston, and click over to Comic Book Movie for the whole thing, to hear about the rebirth pod that turns Steve Rogers into Captain America, where they constructed Allied Headquarters, and the working submarine they built specifically for the movie.

This is a frame grab from the rebirth scene, a moment after Steve steps out of the rebirth pod. He's a little dazed by the transformation process and a bit wobbly on his feet, but looking for all the world like a super-hero. Chris worked out for days for the shot of the pod opening and revealing his new self, and the iron pumping really paid off.

Red Skull about to evaporate a trio of Nazis who have come to confiscate his technology to serve the Reich. Hugo Weaving was really the only choice for Red Skull. Hugo is a chameleon as an actor. He's played so many incredibly versatile roles, from the LORD OF THE RINGS films, MATRIX, PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT. He's never failed to create a multi-layered and complex character. In my own experience with him on THE WOLFMAN, he took a part that was much less significant and inspired us to develop the character into a pivotal role. I wanted Hugo to play Red Skull to SEE what he would bring to the character. He's one of those actors you don't want to look away from."
