Though I continue to wait for him to reteam with the Coen brothers (ten years is far, far too long), I will always be happy to hear about John Goodman being cast in films. He's always had a larger-than-life screen presence and when given the proper material - Walter Sobchak, anybody? - he can create something truly iconic. With that in mind, I'm happy to report that Goodman has landed a role in Stephen Daldry's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, according to THR.

Based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, the film stars newcomer and Jeopardy winner Thomas Horn as a 9-year-old boy named Oskar whose father, played by Tom Hanks, is killed in the September 11th attacks. Dealing with his loss, the young kid goes on a journey though New York City looking for the box that works with a mysterious key that his dad gave him before he died. While on his search, he meets a bunch of different people who have also been affected by the attacks. Goodman plays the doorman of Oskar's building who "goes on a trip to exhume the father's coffin." The film also stars Sandra Bullock and is aiming to be released for the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

While I can't say that I've read the book, this sounds like some pretty powerful stuff and certainly one to look out for. It seems like a lot of pressure to put on Horn, who has never been in a movie before, but if you look at the successes of Chloe Moretz and Hailee Steinfeld from last year, it's fairly easy to have faith.
