Seeing the title Tonight, He Comes always gave the Jr. High school boy inside me a brief chuckle. Oh, does he? Well, usually that’s a pretty private experience between a man and a goat or whatever. But it was actually the name of another problems-of-the-superhero movie starring Will Smith. Perhaps because they know I’m such an immature bozo, Columbia Pictures has renamed the movie John Hancock.
The meaning of the name in the context of the movie isn’t totally clear. It may be the name of Smith’s superhero character. He is reportedly a down and out alcoholic who starts a relationship with the wife of the public relations consultant trying to help him improve his image. Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron play the couple.
No matter what they call the movie, it needs to come across a little fresher than the plot summary. Peter Berg of Friday Night Lights fame is directing and it is a decent cast. But the real life of the superhero thing is starting to get a little old, so we’ll see if John Hancock can breathe life into it.
