John Travolta's Gotti Biopic Finally Moving Forward Again, Adds Anthony Hopkins
Making a movie about the John "The Teflon Don" Gotti seems like a no-brainer. Americans love a good (read: gritty) gangster story, and Gotti's reputation still looms large even eleven years after his death. And yet, his son John A. Gotti (A.K.A. Junior) has been struggling to get his father-son story Gotti: In The Shadow of My Father made since 2010. But after repeated delays and bizarre scandals, that included losing Nick Cassavetes as director, a tangle with Lindsay Lohan, and a lawsuit from an enraged and recast Joe Pesci, Gotti is finally coming togetherůminus its showy subtitle.
Variety reports the project that fell off the map in 2011, has made its mark at Cannes, announcing Academy Award-winner Anthony Hopkins has joined the Gotti cast that includes John Travolta, and Kelly Preston. As the pic's international distribution is up for sale at Cannes, IM Global is boasting Hopkins involvement, yet his role remains a mystery at this time. Surprisingly, Travolta is set to play Gotti. Fittingly, Travolta's wife Preston will portray Gotti's wife Victoria.
In the summer of 2011, Ben Foster was attached to play Gotti's son (the one behind this production), but no mention is made of him in the latest press release. However, considering the crux of this pic is Junior's decision to strike out away from his family's business, we're soon to hear casting news on this role soon as Gotti is expected to shoot in New York this September. Relativity Media has committed to distribute Gotti Stateside. Captain America: The First Avenger helmer Joe Johnston will direct the screenplay commissioned by Gotti and penned by Leo Rossi.
