I’ve been waiting for this one a long time. Johnny Depp is finally getting around to making his movie version of Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diary. This project has been bouncing around for quite awhile now but TheBadandUgly says it will be the very next thing he does.

They got the news from a casting call sent out looking for an actress to play the movie’s female lead, the tragically sexy and possibly crazy Chenault. The casting announcement describes the character this way: “A beautiful, 25 year old, translucent vision from Connecticut, with a killer smile and a wry, enigmatic personality, she wears barely-there sarongs, sunbathes nude, and oozes sexuality in everything she does.” That sounds about right to me.

Unlike most of Hunter S. Thompson’s other work, The Rum Diary is fictional… sort of. It’s the story of Paul Kemp, an alcoholic journalist stranded in Puerto Rico working at the country’s only English language newspaper in the 1960s. The character of Kemp however, is unquestionably based on Thompson and the novel is taken in part from some of his actual experiences working at a Puerto Rican newspaper in the 1960s. It took Thompson 30 years to finish writing it and get it published. It was worth the wait. It’s good shit.

Depp has some experience playing a Hunter S. Thompson avatar. He did it in Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, and even though watching that movie nearly gives me seizures he’s perfect for the part of Hunter S. You should be excited. So read the book, and then get viciously drunk before seeing the movie. It’s what Hunter S. Thompson would want you to do.
