Joss Whedon Already Thinking About Things That Will Be Cut From His Avengers Script![]()
A feature in Australia's Sydney Morning Herald focuses on the darker sides of Joss Whedon's career-- the Wonder Woman movie that didn't go through, the cancellation of Firefly and Dollhouse, even the Batman movie he pitched years before Christopher Nolan got his hands on the material. It's such a glum piece, really, that they don't seem to know how to deal with the fact that Whedon is looking at what might be his greatest career success, directing The Avengers for Marvel and maybe being in charge of his own franchise.
So I guess it makes sense that the one quote they got out of Whedon-- who has been giving a lot of vague Avengers quotes lately, it should be said-- is about all the things he's writing for the Avengers script that he knows won't make it into the final product. Way to look at the glass half empty, dude: “Right now I'm working on a movie that's got enormous stipulations and is going to be changing and fluid every second. I've come up with dozens of scenes and lines and exchanges and monologues that I adore that are not going to be in it. But while I'm writing them they feed me, excite me and they ultimately inform the character. It all goes in.” It's actually kind of encouraging to hear him talking like that, knowing that many writer-directors can be so precious about their words that they leave in plenty of things that should be edited out. But really, Whedon, cheer up! You're playing with superheroes and they're not just action figures or comics panels anymore! I know your whole thing is that you're pessimistic and self-deprecating, but I really don't know if I can start feeling sorry for you right now. |
