Oh Julianne Moore… sometimes I just don’t know what to make of you. You’re BFF with Todd Haynes and are in all of his crazy and good movies (Far From Heaven, I’m Not There), but you also seem to have no sense of what will be a good or bad project, thus appearing in Next mere months after you were so good in Children of Men. Unlike many actresses of your caliber, your appearance in a movie means virtually nothing—it could be a masterpiece, or it could be, uh, Next.That’s why I’m not sure what to think about Shelter, Moore’s latest project according to Variety. It’s directed by the Swedish duo of Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, with one Swedish film (Storm) to their name. The script is written by Michael Cooney, who gave the world 1996’s Jack Frost, a movie about a serial killing snowman with the tagline “He’s chillin’…and killin’.” Shelter is a supernatural thriller with a top-secret plot. Given all the information I’ve just given you, I think we have reason to worry. Maybe she’s just insecure and takes whatever project comes her way? Maybe she’s mad at Paul Thomas Anderson for not casting any women in There Will Be Blood and striking back at him by ruining her own good name? It beats me, but I can’t come up with a single reason for Moore to be in what seems to be a totally valueless movie, other than that she tends to be in valueless movies. OK, Julianne, do what you want. Your deserved Oscar is still waiting for you, provided you make a movie that any Oscar voters can stand to watch.
