The Justice League of America movie just got a little more doomed. It’s bad enough we’re still not getting official casting information from the studios, weeks after we were expecting it. It’s bad enough that most of the major players seem to be passing on the film because of its high popcorn factor (something they aren’t using as a compliment). Frankly, the movie made it’s first mistake by not attempting to use current Batman and Superman actors, instead existing as a separate project. But now it appears the film is getting retitled.
A retitle isn’t always bad, nor is it unexpected in this case, although I expected to see a huge marketing campaign built around the three letters of the JLA. Instead, the name of the project might be something far less iconic: American Heroes.
The new title suggestion comes from Moviehole, who says a reporter friend of theirs suggested that may be the new title based on scuttlebutt around town. The site also came up with the explanation that American Heroes was the foreign release title of JLA as a comic book at one point. I don’t care. It’s still a stupid title.
Calling the movie Justice League at least has some significance to it. There’s a chance even non-comic book fans would recognize the name from childhood cartoons or a passing knowledge of Superman, Wonder Woman, and company. But American Heroes? No, that’s about as generic a title as you can get. JLA means super heroes. American Heroes could be an alternate title for a G.I. Joe project. It’s a title that makes me mourn for a project I was already concerned about yielding a disastrous motion picture. If this is a real title, let’s hope someone comes to their senses and changes it back or, even better, just pulls the plug on the whole thing.
