Last week we reported on the depressing rumor that a remake of the Karate Kid might be on the way. Worse word was that the film was to star Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith, who appeared with him in Pursuit of Happyness. It’s not worse because Jaden’s a bad actor necessarily, he’s just kind of young and you have to assume that if they’re casting a kid his age then they’ll be turning it into a kiddie film instead of a tweener/family film the way the first one was. A lot of us were worried that the Karate Kid was about to become Bratz: The Movie but with wicked kung fu kicks.

Well it seems that at least half of the rumor isn’t true. Will Smith’s production company Overbrook Entertainment is indeed making a new Karate Kidd movie. However news aggregator WENN is reporting that when asked whether or not his kid would be involved, Will said those rumors were “not true”.

I’m not sure whether or not that’s good news. There’s still another unnecessary remake happening, and it’s happening without the original cast, since the film’s primary members are either dead (Pat Morita) or too old and too irrelevant (sorry Ralph Macchio). So go back to being depressed, this remake still sucks.
