Sharon Stone probably wishes she’d just stayed quiet. When asked at Cannes what she thought of the recent, tragic earthquakes in China and the tremendous loss of life there, Sharon Stone responded with: “Is that karma?”. The outrage was instantaneous, with Chinese citizens flooding the internet quite literally screaming for her execution. I’m not kidding about that, just check out some of the really insane comments left on our report of her troubles here.
Though she’s since apologized for her comments, there will be consequences for Stone’s career. I know, I’m shocked that she still has one too. But apparently she was slated to work on a movie called Mermaid Island and now, not so much. China.org reports that producers decided they didn’t want her, specifically because of her boneheaded “karma” comment.
The movie is some sort of underwater action movie, a joint production between China and the USA. It would have re-teamed Sharon Stone with her Catwoman director Pitof. I’d say we all dodged a pretty big bullet here. The involvement of Chinese investors probably helps explain why she was dropped so quickly, but with the importance of Asian markets now it’s likely she’ll have trouble getting work even with solely American productions, at least until this whole mess cools down.
The news of her de-fishification comes hot on the heels of news that China’s largest theater chain is planning to ban her movies, and word that she’s lost her advertising deal with Christian Dior. Even fellow celebrities are out to get her. Chinese movie stars like Sammo Hung and Zhang Ziyi have come out and promised to boycott anything and everything she’s involved in.
I still think the whole thing is being blown way out of proportion. She’s Sharon Stone, isn’t she supposed to say things that are stupid? And who cares? Again, she’s Sharon Stone? And while I can understand the anger of a nation which has just undergone a horrific tragedy, what’s most disheartening about all of this that a lot of the Chinese people who have been visiting our site and others to leave their thoughts on this whole debacle, have somehow turned this into an excuse to hate America as a whole, as if somehow we all put her up to it. Trust me China, we don’t like her anymore than you do. In our case, it’s not because she’s an idiot, but because she’s irrelevant except as a purveyor of truly awful movies which no one here even bothers to see. Sharon Stone doesn’t represent America, she doesn’t even represent Hollywood, and Sharon Stone really isn’t worth your time to hate.

We heard the whole interview on online, but not what you called a "twisted version" and we understand English, I guess better than you. The entire talk of Sharon Stone was even worse, she even used the word "sh*t"! Tell me if one should not be angry with that!!
Don't know where you are standing, one thing for sure, we are ashamed of you if you ever have some Chinese blood. Use a natural disaster to against a government is an old trick for someone. You tell me: if you are the government, what will you do after the earthquake? The Chinese government did not involve itself in this event, rather it was 1.4 billion Chinese people who are angry, in fact, all the people in the world who have human hearts were angry about that comments. This is information age, Chinese people are benefiting from internet. They do not need anyone to teach them or guide them into false understandings, they are not stupid as you.
Doubting the author had read the entire talk by Sharon Stone.
The Chinese Communist Party propaganda machine twisted her words and attacked her, in order to shift people’s anger re earthquake. And this author is just following the Communist propaganda.
Josh T,
No one is a milion times worse than Sharon Stone in what she had said. The problem with you is because did not lose your family, friends, neighourhood, everything that means anything to you, your attitude and feeling is far away from those who had as the result of this earthquake. If your wife and children were buried under debris and you have to watch them die slowly unable to help I believe your attitude and feelings might change towards a celebrity who said they died as a result of bad karma and accuses the decease for not being nice to her false prophet of a friend. I believe after 9/11 many Americans wanted the death of Muslims around the world. Innocent people of middle eastern heritage were targetted with death threat across the US. So stop trying to pretend to take the moral high ground and try be of more understanding. Sharon Stone may not mean much to some people in the West, however as a Hollywood celeb she was representing not only herself but the fruits of her culture and country at an international event.
Unfortunately, for people outside of US, Hollywood IS America. Most people in China have never known an American in person, neither do they have the chance to visit US. For them, the Hollywood movie is the America they've ever known of.
Hollywood moveis and MBA have such profound influence around the globe, to the extend that the actors, actresses, and athletes have become the symbol for American people. When they speak, although they speak for themselves, people in other countries think they are hearing Americans.
I don't believe it was blown out of proportion. She was hitting a sensitive issue about Tibet and China. In comments she claims the Dalai Lama as a friend (which I'm nto saying is a bad thing, but it does add fuel to fire in the Chinese people's eyes). She doesn't understand the history between the two lands, and makes crass remarks about deaths, which are actually predominantly children as many of the buildings that collapsed were schools and kindergartens.
Even before this, the world recently was very "Anti Chinese" because of the issue between Tibet and China and in which most of the activists are not learned at all between the issues regarding that region and there were many media coverages of definitely biased reports. It's a two way street, and for you to complain about Anti-American sentiment, well I'm an American, but I'm also Chinese born, and yet in the two months preceding the earthquake I've been called a criminal solely based on my blood.
I agree with you that hate will not make it better, but honestly, after the issues with the Olympic games, the government's treatment of Tibet and then the backlash of that into the Chinese populace, who would Chinese people side with? Definitely with their nation and against a nation they feel are targeting them.
Doesn't make it right, but I just hoped to bring a little perspective to this.
I just watch her interview (2 minutes)
for all the suffering of the people due to the China earthquack and she say that is karma I think someone should kill her and tell her that is karma.
They should not just kill her but perform the CIA standard interigational method on her before killing her.
