Being a loser has paid off for Katherine McPhee. The would be singer was a runner-up on American Idol, and now she’s found her way into movies. The Hollywood Reporter says she’s been cast in a dark romantic comedy called The Last Caller, a name which will make it pretty easy to confuse with that Robin Williams movie no one saw.
The indie movie is a coming of age story which casts McPhee as a self-obsessed woman looking for love, hope, and meaning after random encounters with other urbanites. The part will not involve singing, which is ok since McPhee’s singing wasn’t good enough to win prizes anyway. McPhee claims she was up for a number of big studio projects, but chose to go with a little indie instead. She says, “This is the first thing that I read that I really wanted to do.”
I have a hard time believing that Katherine McPhee really had all that many other options, but if she did it’s commendable that she wants to start her acting career out slow on a smaller film before being thrust into a big-budget studio picture. I wonder if she can even act? It probably doesn’t matter. She’s been cast for her following of sheep-like Idol fans, not her acting ability.
