When the people behind the Smurfs movie snagged Neil Patrick Harris to play the lead human character, we all knew that casting could only go downhill from there. I mean, no matter who you pick, they're not going to top NPH. Now the prophecy is coming true -- Variety reports that new additions to the voice cast include Katy Perry, Alan Cumming and George Lopez, along with Jonathan Winters, whose casting we reported on a month ago.

Winters, as we knew, is voicing Papa Smurf, while Perry will be Smurfette, Cumming Gutsy Smurf (???), and Lopez providing the voice of Grouchy Smurf. Having also lent his voice to Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Lopez is an animation veteran, but Cumming and Perry are far stranger and more interesting choices. With Perry's penchant for bizarre costumes, Cumming's nonstop sexual ambiguity and NPH's status as America's Most Beloved Gay Man, is this movie somehow positioning itself as a gay camp classic? That might not be the intention, per se... but it might be the best possible fate for a movie that has yet to prove a good reason to exist.
