A lot of us probably would have flocked to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on IMAX this November, which means IMAX exhibitors were among the many, many people who completely panicked when Warner Bros. postponed the movie until next summer. But now they've come up with a replacement that, while weird, makes a little sense-- The Day the Earth Stood Still will debut on IMAX screens on December 12.
Get The Big Picture has all the info, including the fact that IMAX expects to add a significant number of screens between now and the holiday season. Coming up between now and then on the giant screen are Eagle Eye at the end of September and, weirdly, Madagascar 2 in November; that makes a big two-month gap between effects-heavy spectaculars, which puts Day the Earth Stood Still in a great position to snag the adrenaline junkies.
While I'd rather see Quantum of Solace in IMAX-- hello, James Bond's giant abs!-- the Keanu Reeves-is-an-alien movie will probably do just fine. The Dark Knight proved that people will happily pay the extra IMAX ticket prices when it's worth it, so now the people working on post-production for Earth Stood Still had better make sure the movie is worth the price of admission.
