One of the great thing about having so many loyal readers over in the UK for this site, is that they’re usually on the case whenever something interesting pops up in one of the British tabloid rags. The latest comes from long time Blender “Sam,” who spotted a piece in The Sun which claims Pirates star Keira Knightley may end up playing Princess Diana.
This mind you, comes on the heels of those rumors that Keira was sick of acting and ready to quit it altogether. But the tabloids are abuzz with the news that there may be a Princess Diana movie and that if there is, everyone wants Keira to play her. Please note that the operative term there is “want”. That doesn’t mean they’re going to get her.
To be honest, I don’t have a stake in this. I’ve never understood the world’s ridiculous, overblown obsession with Diana, alive or dead. She’s not nearly as interesting a character as some of the media fiends out there have tried to portray her as and I’m a little tired of people putting her death up on the same level as other, important, actual political figures. She’s not JFK, she was just some rich chick who got in a car accident. Get over it people.
That said, I’m sure the movie will make billions off of sobbing soccer Moms and whatever the equivalent of that is over in the United Kingdom. I wonder though, how those same soccer moms will react to Keira Knightley playing her? Physically at least, they’re not even similar. Princess Diana was not shaped like a sexy pencil. More importantly, can Keira act? I’m still not sure of the answer to that question. It’s not like much acting has been required of her in the mostly Depp and Rush driven Pirates flicks.

I don't think it's so much that people think of Diana as some martyred saint that makes her so popular, nor is it her celebrity. Women relate to the more personal aspects of her life--making a bad choice in marriage and having her dreams fall apart, negative inlaws, coming from a broken home and wanting her own marriage to work, poor body image, struggling for independence and her own identity, trying to get her life back together after divorce, etc.
Keira would seem like an ideal choice for the very young "Shy Di," but I'm not sure she has the maturity to play the older Diana. She has been OK in movies other than Pirates.
People seem to have forgotten that Diana did a lot of great things in her life as princess. She really made a difference in that she would get close and personal with the people. She broke major ground visiting an aids patient hospital and holding everyone's hands, being kind and wonderful and unafraid to touch people with aids. This was VERY significant at the time as it was in the early eighties when everyone was still afraid. She did great work with the land mines and gave that much needed attention and a lot of her time and energy. She was warm and friendly with everyone of the people and was so different and loved because the rest of the royals always seemed to be so removed and distant. I wish people would remember these things about Diana more often. She was a wonderful person and made things much better in the UK and the world while she was princess. I think Keira Knightly would be perfect to play her too.
I think Keira Knightley should play her too....hopefully this would be the end of her acting (pouting) career and I won't have to suffer her whiny nasal voice any longer. I mean she was amazing in Domino (joke) so a really badly acted bounty hunter seems like the perfect choice to play the princess of hearts (OUCH). I am English, just a sensible one who thinks the Royal family is a joke and Buckingham Palace, an eyesore. I remember when she died and Elton did that really amusing song and the chavs (mostly sun reading soccer mums) lined up at the abbey crying their way into the crypt...it was really cringeworthy, especially when you consider that when she cheated on ol' big ears those same mums were baying for her blood. Ridiculous.
