Say what you will about the last two seasons, but The Office remains one of the funniest shows on television right now. While most viewers focus on the show's principal characters (namely Steve Carell, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer), not nearly enough attention is given to the background players, who not only contribute their fair share of the laughs, but also represent a few of the show's greatest writing talents. One of these actor/writers is Mindy Kaling (a.k.a. Kelly) who is now headed to the big screen.
Kaling, along with fellow Office writer Brent Forrester, has been selected by Mandate Pictures to write The Low Self Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie, according to Variety. The screenplay will be about a woman whose low self-esteem has led her to only date "losers," but her life changes when the "hottest guy ever" begins to take an interest in her (Did Kelly write this article?). John Malkovich's production company is backing the film, and Kaling will also have a supporting role.
Perhaps this is a result of New Moon taking number one at the box office two weeks in a row, but is anyone else sick of movies where a woman's life is changed by having an attractive man in her life? Even Kaling's character on the show suffers from this affliction in her relationship with Ryan (B.J. Novak). The film could very well go on to be one of the better comedies within the next few years, so I won't denounce the project before it's even been scripted, but it should be said: women from romantic comedies need to learn something about independence.
