Kevin Smith Confronts Joel Siegel Live!

By Josh Tyler: 2006-07-21 00:00:00
Kevin Smith Confronts Joel Siegel Live! Maybe it's a bad thing that Clerks II opened today and the only thing anyone is talking about is Kevin Smith vs. Joel Siegel, but as Kevin would say, fuck it. It's too good to ignore.

The great thing is that it's not over. The drama continues, and maybe if we're lucky, Joel Siegel and his puns will be driven right out of the business making room for someone willing to do real reviewing to take his place.

For those of you going "huh" right now, the controversy started when Siegel stormed out a Clerks II press screening 40 minutes into the film. Apparently the movie offended him. Rather than leave quietly, Siegel made a big show of leaving and made disparaging comments has he left, encouraging others to leave as well. Smith, ever the provocateur, then tattled on Siegel on his website.

It didn't end there. On Wednesday, Kevin Smith confronted Joel Siegel on the Opie and Anthony Radio Show. You have to hear it. Kevin has made an MP3 version of their confrontation available on his official site. Download it, and listen to Siegel make lame excuses for his incredibly unprofessional behavior here. Kevin characterizes him a child and apparently he objects to Smith calling what he did "non-professional".

And because we're not done having fun with the whole Siegel/Smith thing yet, Kevin posted the following hilarious fan trailer on his MySpace page. If only it was real. Come on, what better way to market the movie? Click on the video below and watch.

  • Joel Siegel should have acted professional and watched clerks2 until the end. Instead he storms out like a child and rants all the way out. He wasn't a great critic. He was a small time critic. Now he's dead and someone else can take his place that can do a better job.

    Bubye.
  • Give him a chance to respond... sheesh...

First of all he does, on the day of Siegel's death, on the view askew blog. He expresses sadness over Siegels passing and says that in spite of their rift in the past he actually did like him.

Second... He posted on his other blogs (Myspace... and others) the same thoughts.

Thrid... If he hadn't... What do you expect of him? Just because Mr. Siegel died doesn't mean that everyone who didn't like him should praise him.

I personally am sad to hear of his passing and I agreed with him that Clerks II was horrible. I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan and had loved all of his movies up until that point, but Clerks II just didn't do it for me. But this isn't the time for people to bring up everything Siegel did wrong, or KS's faults for that matter. RIP Mr. Siegel...
  • I also googled Siegel after reading about his death. I'm not sure why it should be expected that Smith note this guy's death. He obviously didn't like him.
  • I too came here because I heard that Joel Siegel had passed away and I was reminded of the flare up he had last year with Kevin Smith.

You know what's telling about Smith? On his blog right now the latest entry is from Smith telling people to go see Die Hard 4 because he's in it. Then he shows his readers quotes from ANY film critic that praised Smith's cameo in the film. Nothing about Joel Siegel dying, the man he got into a scrap with just a year ago.

Now you know what Kevin Smith is really all about.
  • Joel Siegel died today. The name was familiar but I couldn't place him so I googled him and came across this story. I used to like Kevin Smith, now I think he is a dick. Sure, Joel had no business disturbing the showing of Clerks II. But he had the balls to appolgize to Kevin AND compliment him AND endure all the low brow taunting from Kevin and the radio host AND he did it graciously. Kevin was right to call out Joel for his actions but he should have been man enough to accept his appology and drop it. Even though Kevin won the argument and Joel admitted to bad behavior it wasn't good enough. I have a new found respect for a reap professional who made a slip (don't we all) and a new found loathing for a little little man. A genius behind the camera and a boy in real life. How pathetic.
  • Good LORD those text link adverts are annoying, especially for those of us who read by moving their cursor over the text.
  • what a fucking jackass, someone cripple this punk bitch, excuses excuses....
i really have no idea who this guy defending himself is but man oh man ...whoever his boss is fucking fire him!! he is worthless ... Kevin Smith you got props from me man!! i cant even stand to listen to the rest of this guy talk and defend himself... FULL OF SHIT
