Kevin Smith Planning A Warren Zevon Hockey Movie![]()
Director Kevin Smith is currently working on a buddy-cop movie with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, but if you follow along with his twitter feed or listen to his weekly Smodcast then you know his true passion right now is hockey. Last weekend for instance he assembled his View Askew crew and put together a charity street hockey tournament, and now it looks like he’s working on a hockey movie.
MTV scored an interview with the director where he revealed that he’s planning a film based on a Warren Zevon hockey song called “Hit Somebody”. The song is about a hockey goon who loves playing, but has no skill, and so the only way he can stay on the ice is by being the team’s enforcer. The lyrics were written for Zevon by Mitch Albom, author of sappy books loved by Oprah and her book club. Kevin Smith doing hockey seems cool enough, except there’s a catch. He’s not just basing the film on those Mitch Albom lyrics, he’s collaborating with the author on a script. The plan is to set the movie in the World Hockey Association of the 70s, when hockey will still goon friendly and full of badasses. It’s not a comedy, more a drama really. In fact, Kevin says “If I play my cards right and we get the right people in it, it could be an award-type movie.” His plan is to get this going by 2010 or 2011, which is probably bad news for all the other long awaited Kevin Smith projects we’ve been hearing about since Zack and Miri. Where’s Red State? Where’s the sci-fi movie? Supplanted by Kevin Smith’s newfound love of Wayne Gretzky, maybe. Here's the song in question, "Hit Somebody" by Warren Zevon.
