Assuming a Superman Returns sequel ever actually happens, there’s a good chance that Kevin Spacey will be back as Lex Luthor. People of taste and charm know that’s a good thing, since Spacey was one of the best movie villains ever to appear in any superhero movie. People who don’t know it’s a good thing are Batman Begins fanboys and prefer their bad guys blurry, shot with a shaky cam, and indistinguishable from the good guys. Don’t listen to them.

The news of Spacey’s return comes from Bang Media, where they say Spacey told them: “I believe they are in talks at the moment. I have actually already signed up to do it. So if they decide to go ahead with it and they still want me, then I will definitely be in it.” Bold words, considering they don’t even have a script yet. Spacey has apparently failed to consider the possibility that Lex Luthor might not actually be written into the new movie. I for one hope he is, though since he’s had his film, it should only be as a side character, a background piece to whoever Superman’s new villain is. If Singer’s smart, the bad guy focus for the new one will be on someone like Brainiac.

Whether or not Singer chooses to use him though, Spacey is primed. He says, “I'm certainly excited to do another one. I don't think we'll start for a while since we have a 2009 release, but I'm definitely excited about the potential.”
