I’ll be the first to say I was incredibly skeptical about Matthew Vaughn and X-Men 3. When the Layer Cake director took charge and claimed to be using a script he wrote in a few days, I was worried, to the point that I celebrated when he left. Then Vaughn made Stardust, one of my favorite pictures of 2007, while X-Men got Ratner and stunk. I guess we should have given Vaughn the benefit of the doubt.
It looks like Vaughn is headed back to the world of comic books. According to AICN, it looks like the Stardust director is working on adapting Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s Kick-Ass for the big screen. If their sources are correct, Vaughn is already working on the script with his partner, Jane Goldman, even though only two issues of the comic book have come out so far.
I’m not familiar with the comic title, which boasts being the “greatest superhero book of all time” on the first issue’s cover. Scouting around, it looks like it’s the story of a fifteen year old kid who becomes a superhero. He doesn’t have any powers or Bruce Wayne-style motivations. He just becomes a superhero. So far it sounds like the kid is the one getting his ass kicked, but since the story hasn’t had a chance to go very far yet, who knows what Millar and Romita Jr. have planned. With Vaughn potentially the one to adapt the comic, however, I'm willing to give it the chance I didn't give X-Men 3. This is one project I'll be keeping my eye on.
