Though Seth Gordon's most recent film was the thoroughly mainstream Four Christmases, his actual debut was The King of Kong, a documentary ensconced in the strange subculture of Donkey Kong fanatics. So while it might be too soon to say he's returning to his roots, Gordon would definitely be on familiar territory with King Dork, a high school dramedy he's considering directing for Sony.
The movie would based on Frank Portman's young adult novel, which THR reports is about teenage misfit Tom Henderson, whose only refuge in life is music and uncovering the circumstances under which his father died. Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Prods. will be producing the film, which sounds like dark material for them.
Gordon's got a lot on his plate at the moment, including a feature adaptation of King of Kong, but I like the sound of this one. We're in need of a high school comedy that takes a less traditional route, and as generic as Four Christmases may have been, I trust Gordon to bring us something worthwhile.
