It’s official. We now know the name of the best movie of 2010. It’s called Burlesque and while it seemed like a good idea back when it just starred Christina Aguilera, now that THR says Kristen Bell will co-star as her rival, I’m ready to go ahead and pre-emptively award the 2010 Best Picture Oscar.
The film is a musical drama directed by Steve Antin. In it Aguilera plays a small town girl who makes it big in a Los Angeles burlesque club. Remember Christina Aguilera’s Pussycat Dolls music video? Now imagine that with a scantily clad Kristen Bell as the club’s lead dancer, Nikki, a loose-cannon who spins out of control when Christina starts giving her competition. Presumably, whoever jiggles the most, wins.
Of course it’s not all good news and this may hurt the film’s best picture chances: Cher has already been cast to play the burlesque club owner. Should this mean that at some point we’ll see her in fishnets, those Academy Award dreams are over. On the positive, Stanley Tucci is also involved, and he’s the kind man who knows how to stay out of the frame when confronted with a marginally dressed woman.
