The Resident Evil franchise has somehow managed to make enough money to avoid extinction, and so they've appropriately named the third one, Resident Evil: Extinction. Expect plenty of pithy one-liners when the nations critics get their hands on it for review.
Casting on the third film has gotten rolling, and The Hollywood Reporter says Final Destination's Ali Larter will join the cast along with an Aussie named Chris Egan and singer Ashanti. They'll be added to a returning cast consisting of Milla Jovovich, Oded Fehr, and Mike Epps. Really, Milla is the only person that matters so I'm not sure why they even bother with the rest. This is her thing, especially with the rather terrible way Ultraviolet turned out. She needs it in order to verify her box office relevance.
Larter will play a character first introduced in the second videogame from the series on which the films are based. Her name is Claire, and she leads a convoy across the desert and into a battle with the evil Umbrella Corp. Presumably she's attacked by zombies. Milla's Alice character shows up again to fight alongside Claire's group, and kick some serious Umbrella ass. Ashanti plays a nurse named Betty and Egan is a guy named Mikey. I bet he likes it.
Ali Larter is best known as that girl from the two good Final Destination movies, but the 30 year-old actress has stayed pretty busy with or without the life ending franchise. You may not have seen any of her non-Destination work, but she's had a steady diet of indies. This year alone she did three movies: Crazy, Homo Erectus, and Marigold.
Resident Evil: Extinction starts shooting next week, so watch for it in theaters in time for Halloween. Alright, maybe that's a bit early but the turnaround time on these cheap actioners really is getting ridiculously quick. I blame computers.
