Bryce Dallas Howard, the daughter of a powerful Hollywood director, is scheduled to replace Lindsay Lohan, the daughter of a convicted drunk driver and public embarrassment, in the filming of The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond. The movie is based on an unproduced original screenplay by legendary playwright Tennessee Williams. The reason for the change reported in Production Weekly, is unspecified, but if you want to think it’s because Lohan is difficult to work with and can be a real rhymes-with-witch at times, it’s not like I can stop you.

The movie is reportedly about a young 1920’s debutante in Memphis, Fisher (Howard), who wants to leave her father’s money-grubbing family. She falls in love with a poor boy employed by her family and tries to pass him off as a rich suitor to satisfy the aunt who controls the purse strings. Chris Evans, who played Johnny Storm in The Fantastic Four will play the suitor, Jimmy. The always excellent David Strathairn will play Jimmy’s alcoholic father. Ellen Burstyn will play Fisher’s mother and Ann-Margret will play her aunt.

There is no listed screenwriter other than Williams. Of course, an unproduced screenplay from a major talent begs the question as to why it wasn’t produced in his lifetime. Did he not think it was up to his standards or did other people pass on the opportunity? Either way, the cast will be in the hands of first time director Jodie Markell. Howard seems to be making an effort to show up in movies not directed by M. Night Shyamalan, as this picture will follow-up her appearance as Gwen Stacy, the rival to Mary Jane for Peter Parker’s affections in the latest Spider-Man installment releasing this summer.
