Odds are you haven’t seen Party Down. Almost no one did. What you missed, while it was on the air, was one of the best comedies on television. The series managed two seasons and twenty episodes on the little thought of Starz network, in a Fawlty Towers like run of perfect, comedic genius. The show won’t be back, but since no one wanted to watch it on television, hey how about a movie?
A Party Down movie is pretty unlikely to happen, but since one of the stars of the show seems to think it’s far less unlikely than we do, I’m writing this story. Against all odds Lizzy Caplan believes there’s hope. She tells The Playlist: “I have a lot of faith, all of us have a lot of faith. I do not think it’s a ‘don’t hold your breath’ situation but until there’s something more concrete happening, maybe hold your breath a little bit. It’s not for lack of interest on the parts of the cast and the creators of the show. If there’s any way we can do it, then we will do it, and we are definitely on top of that idea.”
Ok that was a lot of pretty vague, positive talking without anything all that concrete behind it. But it’s not like Lizzy Caplan is so hard up for work that she’s forced to sit around hoping Party Down gets resurrected if only because she has nothing else to do. She was naked on True Blood a couple of seasons ago, after all. That has to count for something. She was in 127 Hours too and has three different movies coming out this year. She’s plenty busy, but because it was really good, it sounds like she’d rather be doing Party Down.
If Arrested Development can’t get turned into a movie this is probably never going to happen, but it’s worth noting that Party Down is a lot easier to turn into a feature than the rambling story of a banana stand owning Bluth family. Party Down had a much more focused, stripped down premise following a group of caterers as they lurched from one job to the next and screwed up a lot. Lizzy agrees with this assessment. She says, “I think that it would probably be easier to make a ‘Party Down’ movie than an ‘Arrested Development’ movie because it’s just smaller and there’s less red tape to cut through. It’s not owned by some massive network that probably wants to weigh in a lot. We have a bit more freedom. But also the ‘Arrested Development’ movie would be a much bigger budgeted deal.”
Also, Lizzy Caplan hates Fox. Which makes her my new girlfriend. “I do think it would be easier to get to that position [of making a movie] working with a network like Starz over Fox.”
This could very easily be a pretty awesome Judd Apatow movie. Actually most of the cast is already part of Judd Apatow’s group of regulars. Party Down stars Adam Scott, Martin Starr, and Jane Lynch should send him a strongly suggestive email.
