The Lone Ranger Previews Its Super Bowl Spot
There are probably people out there in the world-- millions of them, in fact-- who are looking forward to this Sunday as a chance to see two different groups of giant men crash into each other for the sake of catching and running with a weird-shaped ball. Then there's a much smaller group of us who just want to see which trailers will premiere. As you can probably guess, many of us here at Cinema Blend are part of that latter group, and we're actually luckier than those football fans, since the stuff we're really waiting for has already started to come online.
The Super Bowl is always a huge opportunity for studios to show off trailers for their most anticipated spring and summer movies, and this year will be no different, with new looks at Star Trek Into Darkness, Oz The Great And Powerful, Iron Man 3 and Fast Six all on deck. Now we can add The Lone Ranger to the list, and ramp up the excitement with this quick preview of the trailer to come. Yes, it's another trailer for a trailer, but it looks pretty good, so swallow your frustration and take a look below.
The Lone Ranger, due in theaters on July 3, is one of the great big question marks of the summer movie season. Johnny Depp is retiming with his Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski, which could be a disaster given the second two films in that series, but the two also collaborated on the wonderful and inventive Rango. It's also got the first leading man turn from Armie Hammer, who slayed it as the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network and was actually terrific in Mirror Mirror, not that anyone saw it. But it also was a famously troubled and expensive production, and more often than not, spending a ton of money to fix problems doesn't make anything better.
But while we wait to find out whether all that money spent on The Lone Ranger worth it, we've got the splashy Super Bowl spot to examine for clues. Does this make you any more excited for it? Or does the legacy of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End still worry you too much to get on board?
