M. Night Has Started Cannibalizing Unbreakable 2 For Spare Parts
M. Night Shyamalan has gone off the rails as a filmmaker but for awhile, he really seemed to be on to something. The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs are all in their own way pretty great films and, as off the mark as his more recent movies have been, I’ve always harbored this hope that he might right the ship by revisiting one of those movies. In particular I’m thinking of Unbreakable, which M. Night has long talked about making a sequel to, and which has a story which really seemed to demand another movie. Rumor was that M. Night even had an idea for a sequel ready to go… only now that idea is gone and I have a hard time believing he’ll ever get around to coming up with another.
Shyamalan tells MTV that he’s started cannibalizing Unbreakable 2 for spare parts. Devil hits theaters in a few weeks, and that’s produced by M. Night Shymalan, the first in a series of movies he’s producing as part of the “Night Chronicles”. It’s unclear when or if another “Night Chronicle” will hit theaters, but when he finally gets around to the third one of them, it’ll arrive using parts of a story originally intended for Unbreakable 2.
The filmmaker explains, “It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for 'Unbreakable,' and it was too much. There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, 'I'll make this the second flick.'” He even started developing it into a sequel story. But now he says, “the third 'Night Chronicles' movie is what would have been the sequel [to 'Unbreakable']. So now I need to come up with a new idea.”
Except I have a hard time believing he’ll ever really come up with a new idea. If he had a great idea ready to go and still didn’t make Unbreakable 2, what are the chances he’ll be motivated to make Unbreakable 2 without a great idea ready to go and pressing on his brain motivating him to make it? I’d say just about zero. But since M. Night admits that when it comes to Unbreakable 2 “Literally, that's the question I get asked the most anywhere around the world,” he has to go on teasing us, lest we lose interest in whatever movie about angry ferns he decides to make next.
