MGM Heads To The Auction Block![]()
Whoah, guys! MGM, one of the most recognized and beloved studios in Hollywood history, might be for sale! It was purchased by a whole bunch of shadowy figures just four years ago, but now it's probably headed for the auction block again, says The Hollywood Reporter. Is it time to panic? Run out and find your own lion to roar to replace the sweet, sweet sound of MGM's logo? Weep openly, knowing that the studio that allowed Busby Berkeley to work his sweet, sweet insanity back in the 30s has been reduced to the auction block?
Well, maybe. Deep within the Reporter piece, among all the speculation about which multinational corporations and crazy entrepreneurs might by the studio, there's this key sentence: "A key MGM insider predicted privately on Friday that the studio would be controlled by essentially the same ownership one year from now." For example, Sony, which has a 20% stake in the company to begin with, is a likely candidate to pick it up, even though most see the $5 billion asking price as way way more than the studio is actually worth. So, unless you're seriously lacking for drama in your life, hold off on the rending of garments about MGM's fate. Given that none of us actually has the money to buy a $5 billion studio-- unless you're reading, Michael Phelps!--- I don't think this is going to affect us workingmen. |
