MTV Honors Brokeback And Crashers

By Rafe Telsch: 2006-06-04 00:00:00
MTV Honors Brokeback And Crashers Leave it to MTV to recognize true genius these days. While other awards shows, like the pinnacle of movie recognition – the Academy Awards, are accused of being pompus and biased, MTV continues to deliver awards the teenage generation can get behind… and maybe a few of us past our teenage years as well.

For starters the 2006 MTV Movie Awards (awarded this weekend, but airing June 8th) gave Wedding Crashers the most awards of the night, garnering wins for “Best Movie,” “Breakthrough Performance” (for newcomer Isla Fisher), and “Best On-Screen Team” (for leads Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn).

It’s a little surprising that last award wasn’t given to Brokeback Mountain who also was honored by MTV. Not only did Music Television honor someone the Academy left behind by giving Jake Gyllenhall the award for “Best Performance”, but they also gave props to the movie itself with the “Best Kiss” award. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, “Best Kiss” is not blind to non-traditional couples, and neither is the MTV Generation.

Additional honors of not were given to Christian Bale for “Best Hero” for his portrayal of the Dark Knight in last year’s Batman Begins and Hayden Christianson was given the reverse side of the coin as “Best Villain” in Star Wars – Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Show host Jessica Alba received “Sexiest Performance” for her Sin City topfull dancing (as opposed to the topless character that was shown in the comics).

Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing was given the “Silver Bucket of Excellence” award for its social awareness. Lee, always one to bring down a crowd, accepted the award with a mournful question: “The sad thing is that the issues that we tried to address with Do the Right Thing are still with us today, so how much progress have we made?”

The “MTV Generation Award” was given to Jim Carrey, the actor who has received the most MTV golden popcorn awards since the show’s creation. Not surprising for an actor who has appeared on the show in everything from his typical appearance to a full Jim Morrison beard and hair, the actor wore a white suit and was followed by a chorus of singing angels.

The star-speckled show will air this coming Thursday on MTV. Since you already know the winners that suspense will be gone, but nobody watches the Awards show for the awards anyway. It’s the performances and odd moments that really make the show a hit, and from the buzz I can tell you this show matches all the rest in its spectacles.
