Can 10 minutes in strategic edits save a work-in-progress that was savaged by international critics on the film festival circuit? Harvey Weinstein certainly hopes so, which is why he successfully convinced Madonna to make “up to 10 minutes” in trims to her historical drama W.E. after the film played poorly to press attending festivals in Venice and Toronto.

To be fair to the Material Girl, her second directorial effort received improved nods at TIFF, but that’s largely because Venice critics dragged the picture through the mud. Now a source tells the New York Post that Madonna has agreed to make a few cuts before her Dec. 9 release date in an effort to address some concerns.

“Maybe it needs a bit of this and a bit of that, and maybe it’s still a work in progress,” Madge reportedly told the Daily Mail. “For God’s sake, I hope it’s over with soon!”

Poor, Madonna. Filmmaking is hard work, and she’s just not used to that! The pop icon did appear at a Toronto press conference, where she pleaded with journalists not to let their opinion of the singer color their reviews. But she should be happy that The Weinstein Company is allowing her a chance to go back and make edits before the film sees the light of day. Precious few filmmakers get such a second chance, particularly following such high-profile “test screenings” as a Gala in Toronto or a world premiere in Venice.

Madonna’s W.E. stars Abbie Cornish, Oscar Isaac, James D’Arcy and Andrea Riseborough in a two-tiered romance that focuses on King Edward VIII's relationship with American divorcee Wallis Simpson, as well as the connection they form (indirectly) with a modern married woman and a security guard. The Post suggests that Madonna’s edits could be implemented before W.E. plays the BFI London Film Festival on Oct. 23. If they result in an improved cut of W.E., we’ll be sure to let you know.
