It might seem strange to bother with making sequels to a movie like Nanny McPhee, after all it was barely a box office blip here in America. But overseas, where people are apparently starved for more entries in the magical babysitter genre, it went big, earning more than $75 million.

So the sequel is under way, and they’re adding new cast members. Production Weekly says Maggie Gyllenhaal is set to co-star in Nanny McPhee 2 with Emma Thompson, reprising her role as the warty, Mary Poppins-like Nanny McPhee. No word yet on what part Gyllenhaal will play, in fact we don’t really even know what this one’s about yet. Odds are McPhee drops into the life of a new terribly British family and magically fixes everything. Maybe Maggie Gyllenhaal will be their scullery maid. Do people still have those? My mental image of Great Britain may be stuck in 1895.
