Maggie Gyllenhaal Replacing Toni Collette In Sam Mendes Movie![]()
I’ve gone on and on about how excited I am for Sam Mendes' next movie, but let me count the ways once again. It’s Mendes, who has proven he’s pretty good at drama, trying a comedy for the first time. It stars John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph, who are adorable on their own but almost painfully cute put together. It was written by Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) and his wife, Vendela Vida, who is also a novelist. And it’s about a couple trying to find a place to raise a baby, a concept that seems to toe the line between “classic comedy setup” and “overdone.”
I was over the moon when Toni Collette joined as a friend of the couple, but even though she’s dropped out, it’s still looking good. That’s because Maggie Gyllenhaal is replacing her, reports Variety, and she’ll join the shoot starting next week. The character is intended to be an old friend of Krasinski’s character, and given that he and Gyllenhaal are significantly closer in age than he and Collette, the duo makes a bit more sense. Plus, Gyllenhaal is precious, and just adds a bit more wattage to the cute parade. OK, I don’t just think this movie will be great because of unending cuteness. Mendes has been really careful with his projects ever since his film debut with American Beauty, and even though not all of them have been acclaimed as that first one, they’ve been worth talking about. We can see when Revolutionary Road comes out in December how well Mendes does with another relationship story, but it’s hard to imagine he’ll fall flat on his face. Mendes keeps attracting talent, and Gyllenhaal probably feels lucky to be welcomed into the fold. We’re pretty lucky too. |
